Dear Friend,

What is it about October? Less than one hundred years ago, many of us were still celebrating the end of the summer growing season and harvesting food we'd grown ourselves. Even here in California, where the changes of season are subtle, October is when we really begin to notice earlier evenings and start to look forward to the winter's peace and the warm holidays to come. Still, October has plenty of warm days and crisp nights to celebrate and enjoy.

The rut has begun for our local Black-tailed Deer. You may see bucks following does and becoming aggressive toward other males. Deer are all very distracted right now, so please drive carefully, and give them a "brake."

UC Davis Road Ecology Center and Information Center for the Environment invite you to join our Roadkill Reporters on the California Roadkill Observation System. Using this website you can report roadkills you observe anywhere in the state, helping all of us to understand the causes of roadkill and how we can reduce the collisions between animals and vehicles.
