Dear Friend,

November is really when the seasons change for many of us, as we begin to prepare for winter holidays and the winter rains. November signals a big change for wildlife, too, as many prepare for the cold, wet months and shortages of food. Some hibernate, some migrate, some snuggle together for warmth. Many of this year's young animals will not see the spring, as nature selects only the fittest for the future of their species. In this month of Thanksgiving we are thankful for the wildlife that makes our world the rich place it is.

Wildlife Tips

bird print bullet points

Tide-pool-hopping is always best starting around Thanksgiving, when the first big minus low tides of the year arrive. Consult a tide table, and never turn your back on the waves. Look for great tide pools at Muir Beach, McClure's Beach and Alcatraz.
bird print bullet points Seasonal fruits like persimmons, walnuts and acorns that can be stored or frozen are welcome at WildCare now. They will help feed next spring's orphaned babies. Here's a complete list of what we can use.
bird print bullet points Acorns are ripening now and wild birds and mammals are feasting. Look for Acorn Woodpeckers and Scrub Jays working to fill their granaries this month
bird print bullet points Swainson's Thrushes are in Marin only in November, when they come to fatten up on the ripe berries of Toyon and Poison Oak. Look for them feeding on these plants with Hermit Thrushes (here all year) and sparrows.

All That Rain Promises

November is a great time for a walk in the woods. The early rains have begun the winter changes that begin another cycle of renewal. You'll see birds and insects, certainly. You may see a mammal -- maybe a squirrel. But you are more likely to find interesting natural life forms in places few think to look-- under logs. Read more...
